Most naysayers say something like, “No one really knows what it means. A thousand people can come up with a thousand different conclusions. Who knows which one is right? Therefore, I’m not gonna listen to any of it. I’ll let God sort it out in the end.”
These folks prefer the bible to remain a closed and mysterious book so that their evil deeds cannot be exposed. The bottom line is that they want to do what they please and not be subject to a moral code.
For the most part, the bible is not difficult. How many ways can you interpret, “Do not be drunk with wine”? How much spin can you put on admonitions such as “husbands, love your wives”?
It’s not that the bible is hard to understand; it’s that we make our own conscience as the moral standard and the bible’s simplicity interferes with our desire to do wrong.
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Tim 3:16, 17)
